Sorbitan monooleate is an amber to brown oily liquid with a HLB of 4.3. It can be dispersed in warm water and ethanol, and soluble in propylene glycol, liquid paraffin, ethanol, methanol or acetic acid. It can also be solubilized in organic solvents such as ethyl ester. It is insoluble in water and insoluble in isopropanol, perchloroethylene, xylene, cottonseed oil, mineral oil, etc. It is a highly lipophilic emulsifier.
Sorbitan monooleate can be used as emulsifier, stabilizer, thickener, wetting agent in medicine, cosmetics, textile industry, machinery, paint, chemical industry, explosives, etc. In pharmaceutical, it is mainly used as a solubilizer or emulsifier for injections and liquid medication; dispersing agents for capsules; emulsifiers and bases for ointments; bases for suppositories, etc. Used in W/O latex explosives, nylon and viscose cord oils, it has a good smoothing effect on fibers. Used as an emulsifier in heavy oil drilling mud; as a dispersant in the paint and coating industry; as a stabilizer in the production of titanium dioxide; as a pesticide, wetting agent, and as an emulsifier in the production of pesticides; as a co-solvent in petroleum products; and as an anti-rust agent for anti-rust oil.
As a W/O type food emulsifier, it can be used alone or mixed with polysorbate 60, polysorbate 80 and polysorbate 65. In China it can be used in vegetable protein beverages, milk, hydrogenated vegetable oil, bread, cakes and toffee, with a maximum usage of 1.5g/kg; in fruit juice (flavor) beverages, the maximum usage is 0.05g/kg. In addition, it can also be used to preserve the freshness of vegetables and fruits (coating) and use it in an appropriate amount according to production needs.
